Politicians banned from trading?

📸 The Daily Beast

A group of senators has reached a deal to ban stock trading by members of Congress.

Voters believe lawmakers should ban stock trading for politicians with privileged information, but such bills have not been successful in the past.

💬 Senators Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.), Gary Peters (D-Mich.), Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), and Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) reached the agreement.

💬 Former Speaker of the House and current California Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi’s portfolio has returned over 700% in the last decade.

Business Insider

Previous efforts to pass a stock trading ban through Congress have failed over the last few years.

But with the Senate’s support, the bill could actually get somewhere.

Here’s what this bill looks like (in bullets, of course):

  • The deal would immediately prohibit Congress members from buying and selling stocks 90 days after the bill is signed into law.

  • It would also ban member spouses and dependent children from trading stocks starting in March 2027.

  • Penalties for violating the law would be either the monthly salary of a lawmaker or 10% of the value of each asset they buy or sell.

💬 The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee will review the bill on July 24.

There is still a long way to go before this can be implemented, but I think most Americans believe it’s a pretty fair idea.

🤖 Xiaomi is launching a 24/7 robot factory

📸 New Atlas

Xiaomi, one of China’s largest smartphone makers, is launching a 24/7 robot factory with zero live workers.

The Beijing-located “dark factory” will produce Xiaomi phones that will be entirely controlled by robots.

💬 A "dark factory" is a fully automated manufacturing facility that operates without human intervention or lighting.

The machines can cooperate with one another, and self-developed intelligent machines can control the factory's production quality.

The factory will even be able to create a dust-free environment all by itself with micron-level dust removal.

It works, cooks, and cleans?!

China’s smartphone market share in the most recent quarter:

1. Apple: 24.74%

2. Huawei: 22.68%

3. Xiaomi: 12.96%

4. Vivo: 5.70%

5. OPPO: 4.48%

Perhaps the wildest stat of this unveiling is that Xiaomi claims its futuristic production process can manufacture one smartphone unit every second.

Yes, 1 smartphone every second, nuts!

Some other key numbers:

  • Xiaomi invested $330 million into the project.

  • The factory will be 81,000 square meters.

  • Annual production capacity of 10 million flagship smartphones.

  • The smartphone industry is expected to be worth nearly $1 trillion by 2030.

This factory is just the beginning for Xiaomi and could very well be the future of smartphone manufacturing.

📈 Xiaomi ($XIACY) stock is up 51.91% in the past year.

🇬🇧 London cinema cancels AI film screening

📸 TimeOut

The Last Screenwriter” is considered the “first feature film written entirely by AI.”

The mission of this historic film is to hopefully open people’s eyes to the potential of AI in film, both good and bad.

So, the film’s team went to find a theatre that could display their creation to the world.

When approached, Prince Charles Theatre was told the film “was an experiment in filmmaking” by someone hoping actually to speak about both the positive and negative effects AI can have on the creative world.

💬 “[We] wanted to find out if artificial intelligence is able to write an entire feature film and how good it would be if produced by a professional team.”

The team behind the film (via BBC)

The film itself follows a celebrated screenwriter called Jack, who finds his world shaken when he encounters a cutting-edge AI scriptwriting system.

Jack eventually realizes that AI matches his skills and surpasses his empathy and understanding of human emotion.

Sounds like it has potential, so why’d they scrap it?

Once word spread of the unique premiere and its controversial writer, ChatGPT, people began expressing their outrage, forcing the theater to eventually pull the movie.

💬 “This backlash speaks to a wider issue within the industry.”

The reaction isn’t so surprising, though; it wasn’t long ago when thousands of actors, writers, and other Hollywood personnel were protesting their own very real concerns about the use of AI in filmmaking.

And it seems that because no real changes have been made to ensure workers in the industry are protected from AI, people are still pissed.

Shocker.
